Police in the Atlantic Canadian province of Nova Scotia on Sunday were hunting for a 51-year-old man who they said was suspected of shootings that had resulted in "several victims".
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the shootings occurred in the small coastal town of Portapique, about 130 km north of the provincial capital Halifax.
The police identified the suspected gunman as Gabriel Wortman and initially said he was driving what appeared to be a police car and was wearing a police uniform but later reported he was at the wheel of a Chevrolet sports utility vehicle in Milford, about 80 km further south.
"Gabriel Wortman is the suspect in our active shooter investigation in Portapique. There are several victims. He is considered armed and dangerous," the police force said on Twitter. It did not give details.
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, which has tighter gun control laws than the United States.
In August 2018, a man in the neighboring province of New Brunswick shot dead four people, including two police officers, in an apartment complex.
