The appeal to support the fight against Covid-19 has struck a chord with people in Qatar and the authorities have started receiving contributions.

According to the latest figures, the National Committee for Combating Covid-19 under the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management has received donations worth more than QR78mn along with more than 70 real estate contributions.

Moza Khaled al-Mohannadi, head of the Support and Contribution Initiative Committee, during a talk with Qatar Television, said 155 companies have expressed their readiness to contribute in support of the government's efforts to combat the deadly virus.

“The government has taken economic and social steps since the beginning of the outbreak of Covid-19 ,” she said.

Among the major contributors are Qatar National Bank (QR50mn), Muhammad Abdul Rahman al-Bahr & Sons (QR10mn) and Muhammad Jassim al Kuwari & Sons (QR3mn). She said the committee has also received several contributions that were of smaller amounts, each below QR10,000.

Al-Mohannadi explained that the real estate contributions were made by hotels, resorts and residential complexes including Katara Hospitality, Aspire Zone, Erbakan Group and Regency Group Holding. These are in addition to the workers' housing and residential complexes.

She praised Qatar Foundation for contributing 1mn masks, 1mn gloves and medical supplies. Other organisations also drew praise from the committee for supporting the welfare and healthcare activities.

“The government could deal with the crisis by harnessing all the resources,'' she said pointing out that many individuals and institutions made contributions even before the launch of the platform.

“The committee then decided to create this platform to receive contributions from individuals and companies,” she added. Financial, real estate and service contributions are received into a special account created for the purpose.
