The ‘Developing Partnership between Public and Private Sectors Conference’ will kick off on March 17 at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel under the patronage of Qatar Chamber Chairman HE Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani, it was announced Wednesday.
The conference brings together businessmen and companies with governmental entities to review prospects of partnership between the public and private sectors, in the light of the awaited law recently approved by the Cabinet, which is expected to be issued soon.
It also paves the way to accommodate the views of the private sector in organising partnerships and to accelerate the pace of understanding the law and its applications, Qatar Chamber said in a statement.
The conference will host experts and specialists, who will define partnership approaches and prepare the private sector, which will benefit from the law once it is approved.
Speaking to reporters, Qatar Chamber director general Saleh bin Hamad al-Sharqi said, “Qatar Chamber held a conference on public and private sector partnership. It was this conference that recommended the need to issue a law regulating this partnership,” he said.
He said the chamber's efforts in this context started more than 10 years ago when it held the first conference, and among its recommendations was the call for legislation to regulate partnerships between the two sectors.
“The conference will play an important role in helping businessmen and companies learn about PPP and its benefits to the business sectors, as well as opportunities that partnership offers,” al-Sharqi noted.
Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani, the chair of the conference’s organising committee, said he hopes that the conference would achieve its objectives, and that the event “is very much welcomed by many governmental sector and business sectors.”
Sheikh Thani said the conference seeks to explore views of stakeholders about PPPs. The sessions of the event will gather many ministries and bodies such as Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Public Works Authority, and Qatar Finance Centre.
Qatar Primary Materials Company CEO, engineer Issa Kaldari, said that the company’s support of the conference stemmed from its support for PPPs, which is in the interest of the national economy.
QNB general manager Group Communications Yousef Ali Darwish said, “We, as QNB, are committed to providing full support to the conference as a Strategic Partner. We praise the role played by Qatar Chamber in enhancing and promoting laws that aim to develop partnership between both sectors for the advantage of Qatari economy, according to the best international practices and experiences.”
Qatar Development Bank (QDB) director of Marketing and Communication Saud Ahmed al-Bouainain said QDB’s sponsorship supports the need for initiatives that boost co-operation between both sectors and review building strong and sustainable partnerships between components of both sectors.
Qatar Ports (Mwani) director of Communication and Public Relations Hamad Ali al-Ansari said the conference is important in addressing ideas, updates, and issues related to partnership between both sectors.
"The conference is a good opportunity for identifying the best measures and views in the field of PPPs in line with efforts exerted for building a strong and sustainable knowledge-based economy,” he added.
