The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) on Monday announced the opening of a new underpass at Mesaimeer Interchange.
The 500m long underpass, opened to traffic two months ahead of schedule, will ease vehicular flow from E-Ring Road towards Doha Expressway.
The new underpass can accommodate more than 3,000 cars per hour and it’s the fourth out of nine underpasses being constructed at the interchange, Ashghal has said in a statement.
While announcing the opening, Ashghal's Ahmad Ali al-Emadi said the new underpass marks the fourth big achievement at the Mesaimeer Interchange.
He added that almost 80% of construction works have been completed at the interchange.
“The new underpass connects traffic from E-Ring Road towards Doha Expressway, providing free-flowing traffic for road users coming from Al Thumama and Old Airport towards Doha Expressway without using the existing traffic diversion,” he explained.
The Mesaimeer Interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar, consisting of three levels with nine underpasses that facilitate free traffic flow.
The 6.1km-long interchange consists of three- to four-lane carriageways to accommodate around 20,000 cars per hour in both directions.
