The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Saturday announced the completion of development works of roads leading to Al Rayyan Stadium and the streets surrounding Al Bayt Stadium.
Coming as part of Qatar's preparations for hosting the FIFA 2022 World Cup, the roads were thrown open in order to provide smooth traffic in the area and facilitate access to the two stadiums, a press statement by Ashghal said.
Announcing the opening, Saoud al-Tamimi, manager of the Roads Projects Department, said the roads were opened before the completion of the stadiums’ construction and it proved Ashghal’s commitment to deliver the infrastructure within the schedule. The two projects play a pivotal role in providing direct links to the stadiums.

Al-Tamimi added that the opening will significantly improve traffic in the area during sporting events and explained that the projects facilitate access to the bus and car parks around the two stadiums and connect many important arterial roads such as Al Khor Road and Al Egda Street as well as Dukhan Highway and Celebrations Street.
Hamad al-Bader, supervisor for the Roads Surrounding Al Bayt Stadium project, said the project includes 13km of road construction, 5.4km of which are roads surrounding Al Bayt Stadium from the four sides and consisting of three lanes in each direction. The roads ensure direct connection with main roads such as Al Khor Road and Al Egda Street.





In order to facilitate access to Al Bayt Stadium area, bus and car access points were provided to the designated parking spaces around the stadium. They include six entrances with traffic lights to regulate the movement of cars inside the parking spaces in addition to 19 designated bus entrances. It also includes pedestrian and cycle tracks, in addition to lighting , afforestation and landscaping in the area surrounding the stadium.
Ashghal developed Al Egda Street by increasing the number of lanes to three in each direction. This is in addition to constructing a pedestrian path that is 4.4km long and 3m wide on both sides of the road starting from Al Khor City to Al Bayt Stadium’s Northwest side. It provides a link to Al Khor Road, which is the main road to reach Al Bayt Stadium.
In addition to road works, the project included the construction of 2.2km of a sewage network and a separate storm water drainage network and an irrigation network.
He also noted that Ashghal is currently implementing development works on Ras Al Nouf Street leading to Al Farkiyah Street. All project works are planned to be completed by the third quarter of 2020.
With regard to Al Rayyan Stadium , Mohamed al-Ateeq, supervisor for the project implementation, noted that the works included developing the roads which provide a direct link to and from the stadium with a total length of about 5 km. It includes two lanes in each direction. Three signal-controlled intersections and one roundabout were constructed to facilitate access to Mall of Qatar, Al Majd Road and the roads connecting to the Celebrations Street.
This project links Al Rifaa area with the neighbouring areas and facilitates access to the vital centres adjacent to the new roads such as Mall of Qatar, Al Rifaa Celebrations Complex and Al Rayyan Sports Club.
One of the most important features of the project is the link with Al Rifaa Metro Station.
Al-Ateeq pointed out that the project also included a 10-km long surface water drainage network and a 3-km sewage network. These are in addition to installation of 339 electricity poles, diversion of existing infrastructure services, installation of traffic lights, signs and road markings.
Besides, afforestation and beautification works in the areas were also carried. A 7 km irrigation network and a 2 km potable water network were also constructed.
“In order to encourage the practice of sport activities, the project included providing pedestrian and cycle paths.
