The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has invited Doha Metro users to avail of the 'Park & Ride' free parking facility near Al Wakra and Al Qassar Metro stations.

"This MoTC project will also provide parking spaces near Lusail and Education City stations soon," the ministry tweeted on Tuesday.

The 'Park & Ride' initiative is aimed at benefiting people who need a car parking space when they ride the Doha Metro. Accordingly, parking areas have been opened near the Al Qassar and Al Wakra Metro stations and more are in the pipeline.

The ‘Park & Ride’ project provides parking spaces free of charge adjacent to Doha Metro stations. It aims to encourage vehicle owners to use the modern public transportation system to and from their destinations to save time and cost.

The project is a part of the MoTC’s Public Bus Infrastructure Programme. It supports the country’s public transportation network and Doha Metro services for citizens, residents, visitors and 2002 FIFA World Cup Qatar fans.

According to an earlier report published in Gulf Times, a total of 700 free parking spaces have been made available for the public near the Al Qassar and Al Wakra Metro stations. Also, MoTC and several bodies concerned have been working to complete and deliver free parking spaces near the Lusail and Education City stations.

"The ‘Park and Ride’ Project is another example of the considerable attention MoTC pays to provide modern and highly efficient facilities and parking spaces strategically distributed across the country to encourage the public to use the country’s modern, sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation," the MoTC had said in an earlier statement.

This would help further improve services on public roads and at major intersections by achieving smoother traffic flow, less congestion and less carbon emissions, it added.
