HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani met the Foreign Minister of Iraq, Mohamed Ali Karim, in Baghdad on Wednesday.

The meeting dealt with bilateral relations, the latest regional developments, and ways to pursue de-escalation and maintain the region's security and stability.

In a joint press conference that followed the meeting, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs called on all countries to work towards de-escalation in the region, noting the increased tensions.

He said that the visit to Baghdad aimed at discussing with the Iraqi leadership the latest developments and stress the importance of de-escalation and distancing Iraq from any political struggles and escalation of tensions in the region. HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said that Qatar is working with a group of friendly nations that hope to avoid escalation of tensions in the region, stressing the support of the country to the unity and sovereignty of Iraq and its people.

He praised Iraq's efforts in strengthening ties with Arab and neighbouring countries, adding that Qatar seeks stability in Iraq so that the country can proceed towards growth, reaffirming that Qatar will continue to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Iraq.

For his part, the Iraqi foreign minister described the visit of HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs as strategic and important, noting that both sides stressed in the talks the importance of de-escalation of tensions in the region.
