The Special Rapporteur on the right to education at the United Nations, Koumbou Boly Barry, has praised the visionary approach adopted by Qatar with regard to education, and the resources it invests in this field.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday at the end of her several days’ visit to Qatar, Barry said that she noted particularly the great importance that Qatar attaches to the right to education as a human right whether at the highest levels in the State or at the level of schools.
She underlined that Qatar and its institutions are working to achieve access to education in many other countries, especially for the most vulnerable groups of the population.
The UN Special Rapporteur welcomed the progress made in accepting international human rights standards, including the ratification in 2018 of the two international covenants and the dialogue with the human rights mechanisms, adding in this context: “I urge the government to implement the recommendations made by these mechanisms in a strategic manner.”
She added that she met with officials, teachers and principals of schools, spoke with students and institutions and centres that deal with human rights and the educational system, visited classes from kindergarten to university, met children with special needs, collected data and information, and asked sensitive and sometimes difficult questions, and thanked all of them for these efforts.
Barry also valued the great attention Qatar attaches to education, and indicated in this context that Qatar’s National Vision 2030 includes four pillars, the first of which is human development, which makes education a priority, in addition to adopting the important and special law of compulsory education. - QNA
