Calls to strengthen fight against corruption, annual general meeting, adoption of resolutions and declarations marked the formal valediction of the seventh Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) conference Tuesday. Members of board of directors and regional chapters were elected during the concluding session.
The biennial election session declared HE the Speaker of Shura Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud as GOPAC Chair 2019-2021. Dr Fadli Zon, the former chairman of the organisation, while addressing the valedictory session, expressed his gratitude to Qatar for hosting the conference. He called for joint efforts to further strengthen the functions of GOPAC and efforts to fight against corruption.
“The commitment of parliamentarians will make the organisation more strong and powerful during the coming years under the Qatari chairmanship,” he said.
During the session, functionaries of new director board and regional chapters were announced while new proposals were adopted by the meeting.
Earlier in the day, discussions were held on the ‘Westminster Foundation for Democracy Supporting Parliaments to Combat Corruption’ and ‘Fighting Fraud and Corruption in Development Projects: Islamic Development Bank Perspective.’
Meetings of Arab Region Parliamentarians Against Corruption (ARPAC), African Parliamentarians' Network Against Corruption (APNAC) and Southeast Asian Parliamentarians Against Corruption (SEAPAC) were also held at various venues. The conference also witnessed meetings of Latin America and Oceania chapters. GOPAC secretary John Hyde along with other director board members and parliamentarians attended the session.
