The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that the second underpass within Mesaimeer Interchange will open on Friday.

The opening is in co-ordination with the General Directorate of Traffic, a statement said. The one-km-long interchange will ensure free flow traffic from E-Ring Road to Industrial Area Road.

The new underpass consists of one-way traffic with two lanes and an emergency lane connecting the E-Ring Road with the Industrial Area Road with a capacity of around 4,000 vehicles per hour. Last month, the first underpass linking traffic between E- Ring Road and Rawdat Al Khail Street was opened. Ashghal has completed construction of the two of nine tunnels at the interchange.

Engineer Hassan al-Ghanim said the newly opened underpass is the second achievement at Messaimer Interchange after the opening of the first underpass in November. “Works of the first interchange were completed six months ahead of the schedule,” he said while adding that 76% of total works have been completed so far.

The new underpass connects the E-Ring road with the Industrial Area Road easing commuters’ access from Al Thumama and Old Airport areas without using the existing diversion resulting in less travel time and free traffic flow. The newly constructed Mesaimeer Interchange consists of three levels with nine underpasses providing free flow of traffic.

There are two main bridges with one connecting Rawdat Al Khail Street and the Industrial Area Road and vice versa. The other one connects E-Ring Road with Doha Expressway South in one direction ensuring free flow traffic in all directions and connecting the main strategic roads together.

The project includes 6.1km length of construction works and can take 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions on completion. The Interchange, scheduled to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2020, will play a major role in improving the traffic movement and saving more than 60% of travel time.
