The Aegean Desert photography exhibition by Prince Nicholas was opened yesterday at the Cultural Village Foundation (Katara), with the attendance of HE the Chairperson of Qatar Museums, Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, HE State Minister Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, Katara Director-General Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti and Qatar’s ambassador to Greece Abdulaziz Ali al-Naama.
The exhibition runs until June 15, 2020.
Dr al-Sulaiti expressed delight at the exhibition’s opening, saying: “It is a very special exhibition that extends bridges of art and communication, not only between two places, but also between cultures”.
He emphasised that the Aegean Desert exhibition blends with Katara’s active and positive role in opening up to different cultures and bringing people together, in addition to documenting the common things that combines the desert with the sea despite all the differences, make an impressive visual dialogue.
He also indicated that the exhibition is considered a cultural initiative that reflects the high level of cultural exchange between the two countries of Qatar and Greece, which will open prospects for closer co-operation on “our common cultural relationship”.
The exhibition included 23 photographs, four of which were displayed inside the Aegean sea mill, and 19 images in Katara’s building 47.
Prince Nicholas wanted to highlight through his lens the similarities between desert and sea, as despite their differences.
The artist went beyond geographic boundaries, so two art stations were set-up in Athens and Doha to present photographs of both the Aegean Sea and the Qatari desert.
The aluminium printed works are displayed in the traditionally-designed Aegean mill that was made specially for this exhibition in Katara’s outer space.
