Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), represented by Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) and the College of Health and Life Sciences (CHLS), is among the co-organisers of the Cudos Congress 2019.
Under the stewardship of Sidra Medicine, the event will also feature contributions from across the University’s academic community.
Taking place from November 23–26, the Cudos Congress 2019 promotes wider understanding of diabetes, obesity and related syndromes as well as their implications for Qatar, the region and wider world.
The prevalence and risk of childhood obesity in Qatar, prevention and intervention approaches to diabetes, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in medicine are among the topics up for discussion.
Attendees and participants will also learn about current and innovative concepts in diabetes management.
The Cudos Congress 2019 will be led and informed by local and global experts in the fields of diabetes, obesity and interconnected fields of study.
HBKU’s participants include QCRI’s Dr Luis Fernandez-Luque who will discuss digital health as an enabler for childhood health promotion.
Elsewhere, Dr Edward Stuenkel, dean of CHLS, and Dr Essam Abdelalim, a scientist at QBRI’s Diabetes Research Center, will chair sessions on islet biology.
Dr Paul Thornalley, Director of the Diabetes Research Center at QBRI, said: “While Qatar isn’t alone in experiencing a rapid growth in cases of obesity and diabetes, its small size and population nevertheless provide a unique set of health challenges. Fortunately, the country is also home to healthcare organisations and professionals at the cutting edge of global efforts to tackle these conditions. We’re looking forward to highlighting our Diabetes Research Center’s activities and contributions at Cudos Congress 2019.”
Speaking ahead of this year’s event, Dr Edward Stuenkel, dean of CHLS, said: “The Cudos Congress 2019 is all about connecting individuals and organisations tackling an era-defining set of health problems. That’s an obvious synergy with our college’s mission to become a dedicated hub of knowledge-sharing in the area of health and life sciences.”
Dr Ammira Akil, principal investigator and Chairperson of the Cudos Congress 2019 at Sidra Medicine, said: “We are excited to have Hamad Bin Khalifa University; Qatar Computing Research Institute, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute and the College of Health and Life Sciences put forward their experts as part of our groundbreaking sessions at this year’s Cudos Congress 2019. Their collaboration and contribution to the congress also showcases how leading entities across Qatar are jointly committed to advancing child health particularly in the fields of diabetes, obesity and related syndromes.”
