The General Directorate of Traffic yesterday observed the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at a function at the Traffic Directorate auditorium. This year’s theme is “Life is not a car part”.
Maj Gen Mohamed Saad al-Kharji, director general of traffic and deputy chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC), Brig Mohamed Abdullah al-Malki, secretary of NTSC, Sheikh Dr Mohamed al-Thani, director of Public Health Department and a number of officials from various departments attended the event.
Al-Kharji said Qatar has become one of the leading countries in road safety as it has set up the NTSC in line with the National Traffic Safety Strategy.
“The country has opened the National Traffic Safety Office and created assessment and follow-up systems that monitor road safety,” he said.
He pointed out that the country is looking to develop the Traffic Directorate to the level of internationally developed departments.  “This goal will be achieved through developing laws, standardisation of accident data, improving information system, building a national workforce and enhancing traffic awareness,” he said.
Al-Malki said the theme has been chosen by the United Nations this year to show that life is not like a car part that can be replaced or repaired.
“Thanks to the traffic policies adopted by the Qatar and the co-operation of all stakeholders, significant progress has been made in reducing the mortality and injuries rate by bringing down the road accidents in the country,” he said.
Sheikh Dr al-Thani said the efforts by partners in NTSC resulted in reducing the number of road accident victims and improving services being provided to the injured.
“It also ensures the best treatment at the earliest,” he said.
As part of the observance, an awareness exhibition was held, featuring various stakeholders working for road safety.
The exhibition provided guidance and advice to prevent accidents and enhance safety.
