Even as champion trainer Jassim Mohamed Ghazali saddled yet another feature winner with Injaaz Stud’s Black Granite topping the Barzan Cup (Group 3), Al Lusail handed Qatari trainer Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani a Cup win for the second straight week at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park yesterday. In the final race of the evening, JP Guillambert, who had guided another Ghazali ward, Luchador, to a victory in the Umm Salal Oaks Trial for three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies earlier in the evening, was astride seven-year-old Black Granite and they beat the favourite, The Blue Eye, a His Highness The Amir’s Trophy (Group 1) winner by a quarter of a length.
In the longest race of the day, the 2000m Ras Laffan Cup, Al Lusail won yet another feature, when he led a one-two for al-Ramzani and the colours of Al Jeryan Stud under Ronan Thomas, with Al Moatasem al-Balushi guiding Abha to a close second.
The win was Thomas’ third of the evening, having earlier ridden two of Alban de Mieulle’s wards to victory - Al Shaqab Racing’s Gtnah in the Oaks Trial for four-year-old Arabian fillies and Umm Qarn’s Jabir to a maiden win.
Frenchman De Mieulle was the most successful trainer on the day having saddled two more winners - Umm Qarn’s Aafreen and Rihab - both ridden by Soufiane Saadi in Oaks Trial for Local Thoroughbreds and Local Arabians respectively.
Besides Luchador, the colours of Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari were in the winner’s circle one more time during the evening when Bentley rode Mohamed Jassim Ghazali-trained Flash Henry to a handicap victory. Ibrahim al-Malki-trained Show Of Strength too returned a handicap winner on the day.
Earlier in the evening, French recruit Challenge De Ghazal, owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani, made a winning debut in Qatar in a maiden race.
