Olympic discus champion Christoph Harting has been nominated into Germany’s 71-strong team for the upcoming world athletics championships in Qatar after initially being snubbed over disrespectful remarks on rivals and the nation’s federation DLV.
Harting, 29, was among 28 athletes named Monday by the DLV into the final team for the September 27-October 6 worlds in Doha.
The 2016 Olympic gold medallist had met the qualifying criteria but was not among the first nominees in August after criticising rivals, dismissing the national title as insignificant, and accusing the DLV of blackmailing athletes to compete at the national championships.
Germany’s team is led by the world’s best long jumper of the season, Malaika Mihambo, and further medal hopes include the javelin team around defending champion Johannes Vetter, decathletes, and runner Konstanze Klosterhalfen.
“We will a well-prepared German team in Doha,” head coach Alexander Stolpe said.
DLV general director Idriss Gonschinska the team is well-prepared for the challenge of a worlds very late in the season and in extremely hot conditions. “Many experiences will be very useful for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo which will take place in similar conditions,” Gonschinska said.
