The Criminal Court sentenced an Asian man to three years in jail after he was convicted of counterfeiting a university degree certificate, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported recently.
The court also ordered his deportation upon serving the sentence.
According to the report, the matter came to light after the man submitted a copy of his degree certificate to the attestation section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with an original stamp and 'Qatari attestation' sticker in his home country, taken from another document.
When the authorities concerned in his home country were contacted in this connection, it turned out that the original stamp and sticker were taken from a valid marriage certificate that had been attested.
Further investigation revealed that he wanted to use the counterfeited document to carry out the necessary procedures for his employment in Qatar, the daily added.
Accordingly, the court found the man guilty and penalised him accordingly.
