Hypermarkets around the country are expecting a surge in customer footfall during Eid al-Adha and thus an increase in sales across a wide range of food and non-food products, Gulf Times has learnt.
Also, the variety of special promos on offer in different hypermarket chains in the country has helped drive demand among customers, especially homebound expatriates who are making the most of the vacation.
Among the popular non-food items driving demand are electronic gadgets and smartphones, as well as household appliances, such as smart TVs and home entertainment systems.

One product merchandiser noted that aside from the ‘mega sales’ and special discounts, foreign exchange rates also play “a significant factor.” In some currencies that have weaker currencies, he said “it is cheaper” to buy a 55-inch or a 65-inch smart TV in Qatar than to buy it in one’s home country.
Similarly, smartphones, which are also being sold on promotion or at discounted prices, are very popular among customers, especially the low-end and mid-range phones. Flagship or high-end phones, “though not as popular” as their other counterparts, also have a steady customer following, the merchandiser said.
She added that serious hobbyists and professional photographers in Qatar are also taking advantage of the promotional prices of digital cameras, particularly mirrorless cameras. Video game consoles and game cartridges, as well laptops are also on sale in some hypermarkets.
Other popular non-food products that are driving sales, according to another store manager, are assorted toys, perfumes, jewellery and watches, and garments. “Many expatriates going on vacation for Eid al-Adha are still making the most of low prices, so they bring home these gifts to their loved ones, relatives, and even friends,” he said.
He also said because of the Eid al-Adha festivities and celebrations, many households are cooking for family and guests visiting during the holidays. “Many food items such as meats, rice, assorted nuts, and sweets, among many others are very popular grocery items this season,” the manager said.
While most schools are closed for vacation, this early some hypermarkets have already launched their ‘back-to-school’ promotions, which include discounts on school bags and various school supplies.
Some back-to-school promo prices even extend discounts on household appliances and electronic gadgets, men’s and women’s apparel, meats, sweets, and a wide assortment of other food products.
