The Uruguay embassy in Doha has joined the ‘Green Embassies’ in Qatar after forging a partnership with the pioneer Qatari small and medium enterprise, Elite Paper Recycling (EPR), recently to promote environmental sustainability.
Uruguayian ambassador Dr Jorge Antonio Sere Sturzenegger and EPR chairman Abdalla al-Suwaidi led the agreement signing at the EPR head office.
“Uruguay and Qatar share the principles of preserving the environment and natural resources, and are engaged in integrating them in their policies as core values within environmentally responsible practices,” the envoy said in a press statement.
He noted that such initiative forms part of the Uruguay Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts to help preserve Mother Nature such as material recycling, waste sorting, and a rational use of water and energy.
As part of this co-operation, the embassy will regularly recycle wastepaper to enhance responsible behaviour in the workplace and implement environment-friendly procedures in daily activities, Dr Sere Sturzenegger added.
In addition, such move will ensure waste papers containing confidential information will be disposed and recycled properly.
The embassy also plans to organise activities, media campaigns and educational programmes aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of recycling.
“The adoption and implementation of high sustainability standards make the workplace well-functioning and productive,” Dr Sere Sturzenegger said.
Al-Suwaidi said that EPR, which partnered with more than 250 schools, 700 private and publics entities, including hypermarkets, ministries, embassies, and other establishments across Qatar, is now recycling more than 3,000 tonnes of waste paper monthly.
The Uruguay embassy becomes that fourth ‘Green Embassy’ in the country besides Italy, Argentina, and Switzerland, while the French embassy in Doha signed a collection agreement with EPR in 2017.
“We are very proud that we are exporting 80% of our products globally to various countries across Asia, Africa Middle East: China, Oman, Singapore, Malaysia, in addition to negotiations with Europe and America,” he added.
EPR, which has a fleet of more than 100 trucks and 2,500 dumpster strategically deployed across Qatar, collects all types of waste paper 24/7.
