The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has confirmed the UAE's continued violation of the International Court of Justice's decision of July 23, 2018 that calls on the UAE to allow Qatari students to return to study if they so wish, or access their academic records, as well as allowing those affected to appeal in UAE courts.
Dr Mohamed al-Saadi, director, international co-operation department, NHRC, said in discussions at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva that till now, the UAE has not responded to the ICJ's decisions on flagrant violations of Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 13 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. "
At the same time, al-Saadi explained that the affected Qatari students had complained to the Special Rapporteur on freedom of education who promised to continue working to receive compensation for violation of their right to education.
He said that the NHRC monitored 513 violations during the period from 2017 to 2018 by the blockading countries as a result of their unilateral measures against Qatar.
In his speech, which highlighted the continuing violations of the right to education for Qatari students, al-Saadi said, "In addition to these violations, 66 Qatari students were affected in Saudi Arabia, 148 in the UAE and 28 in Bahrain, noting that these countries forced affected students to leave their territories and deprived them of completing their studies.”
He added that the violations were also confirmed in the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), issued in December 2017, entitled "The impact of the current Gulf crisis on human rights," as documented by international organisations such as Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch.
