The prices of different varieties of fish have been stable at the Al Wakrah market of late and these are generally available in good quantities as well, it is learnt.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that generally there has been no noticeable increase in prices since the holy month of Ramadan, except for Hamour, whose rates have doubled.
The Hamour that was available for QR25 during Ramadan is now being sold for QR50, according to the report.
Other fish varieties, though, were available for lower rates. For instance, King Fish was being sold for QR30 a kilo, Zubaidi for QR30 and Sheri for QR6-8, while other varieties cost QR10-20 per kg.
Some Qatari men spoke to the daily about their experiences at the market, stressing that they preferred going there instead of buying from retailers outside due to the competitive prices and fresh catch available there.
Jassim Mohamed said the market has seen a considerable turnout of customers after Eid al-Fitr. This was because many people did not consume much fish during the fasting month and were keen to buy different kinds of fish after that period, he explained. He added that the prices also encouraged people to buy bigger quantities, which would be adequate for families, the daily added.
Abdulla Faraj said he observed that there was a shortage in the supply of imported shrimps, as 1kg of Indian shrimps was being sold for QR35. He, however, expected a drop in prices due to good supplies.
