Qatar, the host of the 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, has been working hard to help develop a framework that will promote peace and stability in the region and globally, Italian member of parliament (MP) Gennaro Migliore has said.

“The country’s efforts are shown in our committee - IPU’s Committee on Peace and International Security - where we approved a very important resolution in the fight against terrorism,” Migliore said on the sidelines of the conference, which concludes today.

The accord, drafted by members of the committee, rejects the use of mercenaries as a way to undermine peace and violate human rights. It aims to strengthen the methods against recruiting citizens and children from other countries to become terrorist fighters.

Migliore said Qatar and the Italian delegation, among other IPU members, took part in the drafting of the resolution, set to be implemented soon.

“I want to thank His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for the hospitality because the organisation of this important assembly shows that Qatar is totally involved in the development international relationships,” he stressed.

Migliore, who was elected as a member of IPU’s Committee on Peace and International Security, said this high-level meeting saw close collaboration between legislators from different parliaments around the world to foster peace and security.

The Italian lawmaker joins 21 other people in the Assembly in their efforts to heighten co-operation against extremism other terrorist threats.

He noted that they also aim to develop new opportunities in dealing with other global issues like climate chance and technological revolution, among other challenges.

Migliore considers peace and security as the most important topics tackled at the conference, as well as human rights, innovation, and sustainable development.

“Everyone has to collaborate to achieve peace, particularly in a region where conflicts take place such as in Syria, and that is why we think that only an international approach can change the situation,” he pointed out.

Migliore expressed confidence that close collaborations with Qatar and other countries in the region will continue aimed at combatting terrorism.

“Qatar is crucial in this region,” he stressed, describing it as “an extraordinary country where transformations are so visible.”

Qatar’s close co-operation and solid support to the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism was also underlined by the latter’s Under-secretary General Vladimir Ivanovich Voronkov.
