A high-speed train from Germany derailed in the Swiss city of Basel late Sunday, a spokesman for German rail company Deutsche Bahn said, but no injuries have been reported.

The engine car and one carriage derailed as the ICE 373, which had 240 people on board, arrived at Basel's central SBB station, the spokesman said.

The train was gradually evacuated and services were disrupted between Basel SBB and Basel's Badischer Bahnhof station, with other passengers advised to take the tram.

It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment or how and when the train would be removed.

The high-speed train was on its way from Berlin's Ostbahnhof station to the Swiss resort town of Interlaken.

It remains unclear when regular traffic is to resume. In an online update to passengers, Deutsche Bahn said traffic to Basel could be interrupted until Tuesday evening.

It is not the first time an ICE has derailed in Basel. In November 2017, another of the trains derailed in the city's other central station though no one was injured.
