A unique Sambo show will be presented in Qatar for the first time at Aspire Zone as part of the Qatar National Sport Day 2019 celebrations.

The Sambo show is one of a series of projects held in continuation of Qatar-Russia Year of Culture 2018. The event will take place in partnership with International Sambo Federation (FIAS). The general partner is Russian oil company Rosneft.

The Sambo show programme will consist of interactive master-classes and workshops performed by seven of the best Russian Sambo experts, showcasing the diversity of this combat sport, based on the synthesis of the very best of the world’s martial arts.

During the interactive workshops, professional trainers will show the audience the basic Sambo self-defencse techniques, talk about the uniqueness of Beach Sambo and invite them to take part in the various master-classes and competitions with a chance for them to win prizes. Guests will also have an opportunity to explore a special photo exhibition showcasing the 80-year history of Sambo.

In parallel to the show, the event will also hold other activities for children such as face painting and a photo shoot with mascots to keep everyone entertained.

Qatar’s ambassador to Russia Fahad bin Mohamed al-Attiyah said: “We are thrilled to extend the successful ‘Year of Culture Qatar-Russia 2018’ through additional activities and welcome the Sambo sport to Qatar for the first time.

“This initiative is yet another unique opportunity for shared cultural exchange, demonstrating Qatar’s festive outlook on sports, while also displaying Russia's diverse sport and cultural background.”

Nasser Abdullah al-Hajiri, chairman of the National Sport Day Organising Committee, said: “Aspire Zone Foundation provides a unique platform to introduce new sports to members of the local community in Qatar. Since it started, National Sports Day (NSD) has provided the perfect opportunity to offer different types of activity in Qatar like Rugby, US Football, Japanese Kendo, and now the Russian self-defense martial art Sambo.

“During the NSD, Aspire Zone will combine sports from the East and West in an opportunity to explore cultures and sports from across the world. We highly-appreciate the current collaboration with the Russian party in introducing Sambo to thousands of Aspire Zone visitors and sports fans during Qatar’s National Sport Day.”

Sambo, literally meaning self-defense without weapons, is a unique martial art and combative sport that was created in Russian Federation. It is based on the mixture of all combative sports around the world. With Qatar being an advocate for sports, the country is a great platform to showcase and promote the significance of Sambo sport.

Happening for the eighth consecutive year, Qatar's National Sport Day was launched on February 12, 2012. The principle target remains to promote and advance a healthy way of life across Qatar. AZF invites all members of the community in Qatar to join its NSD celebrations and enjoy everything the foundation has to offer in combining sports and physical activity with spectacular events.

The NSD activities at Aspire Zone are sponsored by Qatar Gas and Ideal Solutions (official sponsor), Qafac, KidZania, Aseel, Ali Bin Ali Holding, and Baladna (event partners).
