Occidental Petroleum of Qatar (Oxy Qatar) and its employees contributed QR84,020 ($24,019) to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund of the southern Indian state of Kerala, which was affected by a major flood disaster in August this year.

Oxy Qatar officials, including president and general manager Andrew H Kershaw, handed over a cheque for the amount to the Indian ambassador P Kumaran at a meeting at the embassy.

In a statement, Oxy Qatar pointed out that many lives were lost in the Kerala floods, families torn apart and suffered losses that will never be recovered.

“Many Oxy Qatar employees and their families were affected, experiencing water in their homes that destroyed and washed away property and livelihoods.”

Kershaw said: "It will take a lot of time, efforts and/or resources and support, small and big, from one and all, to rebuild Kerala.

"I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to those affected by the tragic floods in Kerala. Many have lost their homes and some have lost their lives. I am humbled that Oxy Qatar has been able to provide these employee donations to support the people of Kerala and help them rebuild their lives.”
