US President Donald Trump will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, along with a delegation led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, the White House said on Tuesday. The annual conference brings together powerful political and business leaders from around the world at a luxury venue in the Swiss Alps. Next year’s event is scheduled to take place January 22-25.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders announced that Trump would attend for the second year in a row. Trump returns to the forum after launching a trade conflict with China and continuing to champion an America-first, anti-globalisation agenda. The World Economic Forum said in November that the theme of its 2019 meeting is ‘Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.’
Representatives of more than 100 governments and 1,000 companies are expected to attend, raising the possibility that Trump will mingle with high-profile business leaders who have spoken out prominently against his policies.
The US delegation also will include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Labour Secretary Alex Acosta, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Sanders said. Trump’s daughter Ivanka, an adviser to the president, and her husband Jared Kushner, also an aide to Trump, also are in the delegation.
