Malaysia Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed has praised the role of the State of Qatar in fighting corruption and supporting development issues in many countries.
He was referring to the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award, which is an initiative by His Highness the Amir to support the efforts of the UN to fight corruption and encourage those who contribute to combating it. 
Dr Mohamed said this during a session with winners of the award, which was organised by Malaysia’s National Centre for Governance, Integrity, and Anti-Corruption (GIACC) in co-operation with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC). The session was attended by HE the UN Special Advocate against Corruption Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri. 
The Malaysian prime minister expressed his thanks to the State of Qatar and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for the international efforts to fight corruption through establishing ROLACC and the Anti-Corruption Excellence Award. He also expressed his pride that Malaysia has hosted the awards ceremony.  Dr Mohamed reiterated his commitment to supporting these efforts globally and locally. He called on countries of the world to join the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and for the Malaysian youth to work on winning the award. He also presented the efforts made by Malaysia to face corruption such as establishing the GIACC, formulating national policies and setting up private institutions to fight corruption. 
He highlighted the importance of the rule of law saying that governments would never prosper without integrity and transparency. He said the award is a great incentive for governments, individual initiatives, academic institutions, press and civil institutions to fight corruption, since it is usually has been the cause for the downfall of many civilisations. 
Dr Mahathir praised the ROLACC which is the main organiser of the award, as well as GIACC, the Malaysian Institute of Integrity and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. After the session, the prime minister along with HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri and the Deputy Prime Minister and head of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail launched the national initiative to fight corruption and the guidelines on the correct procedures that help financial institutions prevent corrupt practices in the private and public sectors.
