Qatar University (QU) concluded the seventh round of “Qatar Scientists in Biological Diversity,” a programme which aims to attract both male and female Qataris to the field of health, science and scientific research.
The project supports Qatar National Vision 2030, especially those related to the development of the health sector, and the graduation of qualified cadres in this field, in order to ensure the security of this sector and enhance its quality services by providing qualified Qatari cadres with high scientific qualification.
The programme saw the participation 182 students this year and a total of 474 students since its establishment in 2013.
In her speech at the ceremony honouring the participants of the students and their schools, the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Dr Mariam al-Maadeed, noted the achievements made since the project was launched, saying that the project raised the percentage of Qatari women to 47.7% in the College of Health Sciences and men to 59.7% in health education colleges, which means an annual increase of 10% in Qatari students in all health specialities.
For her part, the Founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Director of Biomedical Research Centre, Dr Asma al-Thani, said every year the programme sees a noticeable increase of about 30% in the number of students and a 95% increase in the participation rate across all schools in Qatar.
In addition, Dr Asma discussed the programmes plans to expand, including on a global scale, where it plans to support people with special needs, refugees and also plans to contribute to science in third world countries in Africa.
“Qatar Scientists in Biological Diversity” is an educational programme offered at the Biomedical Research Centre at Qatar University in collaboration with various business partners including: Al-Gannas Qatari Society at Katara – the Cultural Village, Ministry of Interior’s Forensic Lab Department, Sidra Medical and Research Centre, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Health and Qatar Biobank for Medical Research as the official sponsor, as well as many other national partners all with the goal of creating a consciences, responsible generation in the fields of health, science and research.
