“I forgot about the humidity,” jokes David Himmelman, College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s newest dean of the School of Business Studies. However, after nine years in the Gulf region previously, returning, this time to Qatar, “feels like home” he said.
Himmelman is looking forward to the role of dean of the College’s largest school with 830 students, most of whom are Qatari nationals, according to a statement issued yesterday. Himmelman has a long history as a post-secondary administrator, spending the past two decades at the Dean level.
His leadership in education and jovial disposition make him a perfect fit for the college, which positions itself as an engaging and student-centred institution where learners come first.
His passion for leading teams in the education sector comes from his strong appreciation of education.
As an educator himself for over 30 years, he has seen the difference quality, accredited and global education can bring to people.
“Education changes lives,” he says with passion. “It changes the lives of the student being educated and it transforms societies into modern economies.”
Qatar is one such economy. “The spectacular transformation of Qatar’s economy since the 1990s is remarkable,” said Himmelman.
“No doubt that the growth of the education sector in the State has a direct correlation with the growth of the society, the labour market and the energy and industry sector.”
One of Himmelman’s main goals during his tenure as dean is to expand the offerings in the School of Business Studies to keep enhancing the educational landscape of Qatar.
“A priority for me is to meet with the business community to understand their needs for highly-trained employees, and help ensure CNA-Q stays relevant by offering what the country needs. Beyond our commitment to educating accounting, HR and marketing professionals, there are opportunities for expansion into many other areas of business management as the economy of Qatar expands and diversifies  – the future is looking bright!”
