Rashid al-Athba and Reem al-Sharshani claimed top honours in the men’s and women’s skeet events respectively at the Qatar Shooting & Archery Association (QSAA) Cup that concluded at the Lusail Shooting Complex yesterday.
The shooters overcame tough conditions of strong winds and rain especially in the women’s skeet event.
While al-Athba took the men’s skeet gold, Mohamed al-Minkhas and Saeed Abu Sharb finished with silver and bronze medal positions respectively.
The women’s skeet competition saw Reem al-Sharshani display superb skills to clinch the gold ahead of Sarah Mohamed, who had to settle for silver. Bronze went to Hajar Mohamed.
The winners were honoured by Qatar Shooting & Archery Association president Ali Mohamed al-Kuwari and secretary-general Abdullah al-Hammadi, and members of the Board of Directors.
Al-Kuwari said this tournament was the focus of everyone’s attention as most of these shooters will now compete in the Asian Championships in Kuwait and the Arab Championships in Doha in November.
Meanwhile, shooter al-Athba said, “The final day of the competition was the hardest for me, but the experience and confidence that I enjoyed through regular training at the Lusail Complex gave me the opportunity to win gold. I won the World Military Championship gold last week in Italy, which has helped me gain confidence. I will continue my training during the next two days in preparation for the Asian Championships and also the Arab Championship, which is one of the important tournaments.”
