Tanzania's richest man, who was kidnapped last week, has been released, one of his family members told dpa early Saturday.
The billionaire tycoon Mohammed Dewji was in fine health, family spokesman Azim Dewji said, adding that he had been released on Friday night and had immediately called his father.
"Looking at him, he seems to be in good health. ... Maybe he is disturbed psychologically given what happened, but he looks to be in good health," Azim Dewji said.
The spokesman declined to give any further details, saying Dewji would speak about it himself soon and explain what had happened.
Mohammed Dewji, who is reportedly worth 1.5 billion dollars, was kidnapped as he left a hotel in Tanzania's economic capital, Dar es Salaam, more than a week ago.
Dewji, 43, owns the METL Group conglomerate, which operates in a wide range of industries including trade, agriculture and financial services, among others, according to Forbes magazine.
A statement posted on METL Group's website thanked President John Magufuli and other people around the world for praying for him.
His family had offered almost half a million dollars in reward money for any information leading to Dewji's whereabouts, but it is unclear if anything was paid or whether a ransom was demanded.
Police on Friday said that they had identified the car and driver that had snatched the tycoon through CCTV, adding it was a vehicle from a neighbouring country, but refusing to give further details.
