The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the opening of sections of a new interchange on F-Ring Road, paving the way for smooth traffic and offering a direct connection to the upcoming Al Thumama Stadium.

The opening was held in the presence of Youssef al-Emadi, manager of the Highway Department; Saoud al-Ansari, Al Thumama Stadium project manager; Brigadier Mohamed Marifiya, manager at the Ministry of Interior's Traffic Safety and Engineering Department; and Sheikha al-Jufairi, Central Municipal Council member, along with other Ashghal officials and project engineers.

The new interchange will facilitate free-flowing traffic between Doha and the northern and southern areas and also provide a direct connection with Al Thumama Stadium. "The new achievement is part of infrastructural preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, for which Ashghal is keen on accelerating the works and delivering them ahead of schedule," Ashghal has said in a statement.

The new project is considered a vital interchange in the country, consisting of two levels and including a main bridge, four loop bridges and four underpasses for vehicles as well as two pedestrian bridges and six tunnels for pedestrians and bicycles.

The sections opened include access from F-Ring Road to G-Ring Road in both directions as well as a 1.5km road linking the new interchange to Umm Bishr Interchange. This is in addition to opening two loop bridges and two carriageways and a 3km service road along F-Ring Road.

Completion of the interchange will provide a major link connecting the southern part of Doha Express Highway with the main Doha Expressway and 22 February Street, linking the south of the country to its north via Doha. It is located on F-Ring Road and directly connects to G-Ring Road and the southern part of Doha Express Highway with E-Ring Road, Rawdat Al Khail Street, Industrial Area Road and Doha Expressway.

The interchange will serve a number of residential areas, such as Al Thumama, Mesaimeer, Abu Hamour and Nuaija, and enhance traffic flow from the southern areas of Al Wakrah, Al Wukair and Doha, according to Ashghal.

The new achievement is part of the infrastructural preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and Ashghal is keen to accelerate the pace of work and hand over World Cup-related projects ahead of schedule.

Once complete, the new interchange will serve Al Thumama Stadium, one of the venues of the tournament. It will also ease access for visitors coming from Al Wakrah and Ras Abu Aboud stadiums.

The new interchange will include safe passages for the public, with two bridges and six tunnels, to facilitate safe access to the match venues. Upon completion, it will provide free-flowing traffic for those coming from Hamad International Airport, Mesaimeer and the Industrial Area, in addition to those coming from the country's southern areas and Al Wakrah Stadium towards Al Thumama Stadium.

Project engineer Hassan Al-Ghanim said large parts of the interchange were opened more than five months ahead of schedule and it would be fully opened in the second quarter of 2019. He added, “The new opening will reduce travel time by more than 60%. Those coming from F-Ring Road will have direct access to G-Ring Road and the southern part of Doha Express Highway without the need to use Najma Street, Airport Road or Al Wakrah Road."

Al-Ansari stressed that the interchange is an access point for three key facilities. It will provide direct access to Al Thumama Stadium and link traffic coming from Al Wakrah and Ras Abu Aboud stadiums. The official also thanked Ashghal for the speedy ongoing works at the interchange.

Road users coming from Mesaimeer, Abu Hamour and the Industrial Area via F-Ring Road can turn right at the new interchange to G-Ring Road or continue through the Umm Bishr Interchange to the Southern Part of Doha Express Highway and the southern areas such as Al Wakra and Al Wukair.

Commuters coming from Hamad International Airport Road, Airport Road and Najma Street, via the F-Ring Road can use the loop bridge to reach the G-Ring Road or continue through the Umm Bishr Interchange to the southern part of Doha Express Highway and southern areas such as Al Wakrah and Al Wukair.

Travellers coming from Hamad International Airport and Al Wakrah Road via G-Ring Road can turn right at Umm Bishr Interchange to reach F-Ring Road via the new interchange. Road users can turn right at the new interchange towards Najma Street, Airport Road and Hamad International Airport or use the bridge leading to Mesaimeer, Abu Hamour and Industrial Area Road.
