Katara – the Cultural Village Foundation has honoured graduates of the traditional handicrafts programme organised by Katara between December 2017 and April this year.
Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, general manager of Katara, honoured the graduates at a ceremony and praised the efforts of trainers who took part in the initiative.
“I was surprised to see the large number of participants in the programme as these traditional handicrafts had started to vanish. It was a successful programme and we are pleased to receive these creative individuals here,” Dr al-Sulaiti said.
He emphasised the keenness of Katara to preserve and maintain the heritage of Qatar through raising awareness among the public and conducting workshops to educate the new generation to pursue the ancient skills and handicrafts.
Speaking at the ceremony, Salma al-Nuaimy, cultural consultant and head of the Heritage Committee at Katara, welcomed the graduates and hailed the interest of the youth to enter this significant field of Qatari heritage.
“We had three categories of traditional handicrafts in our programme, such as gypsum decoration and embroidery, and we also had some courses in handicrafts especially for women”, she explained.
The programme hosted 36 trainees who successfully passed the intensive handicrafts courses and fared well in the training, Katara said in a statement.
