Vodafone Qatar has said it is leveraging the expertise of its international peers to deploy 5G capabilities in Qatar, building on an established track-record of innovation.
International Vodafone offices across the globe are currently working to “completely revolutionise the way people work and live by transforming the Internet”, the company has said in a statement.
From conducting trials to overseeing research groups, the converged digital services provider is world-leading on the development of 5G.
In 2017, Vodafone Italia officially launched a project to test 5G technologies via the 3.6-3.8GHz band in the city of Milan.
Then, just ahead of the Mobile World Congress that took place in February this year, Vodafone completed the world’s first 5G call in Spain, in partnership with Huawei.
Earlier this year, Vodafone UK unveiled seven cities that will become 5G trial areas, with rollouts starting between October and December 2018.
The company is also planning to test new 5G applications such as augmented and virtual reality in offices, factories and hospitals.
Last month, Vodafone Spain announced the launch of 5G trials in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Malaga and Seville.
“We’re entering a brand-new phase in the evolutionary journey of technology. With a long and established track record as one of the world’s top converged digital services providers, there are few organisations better equipped to navigate people and businesses through it,” said Vodafone Qatar CEO Sheikh Hamad Abdulla Jassim al-Thani.
“Our promise to turn Qatar into one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world is supported by more than 20 years of global smart technology knowledge and backed by extensive experience of deploying such technology around the world, as well as leadership of organisations such as the Next Generation Mobile Networks group and the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey. This expertise will enable us to access the benefits of 5G earlier than expected, thus accelerating our country’s progress towards fulfilling Qatar National Vision 2030,” he added.
In a bid to create Gigabit Qatar, Vodafone Qatar has drawn on this expertise in successfully conducting initial tests in the 3.5GHz band allocated for 5G, the first which took place last month.
Vodafone Qatar’s engineers are already laying the groundwork for a 5G network in key locations across strategic cities in the country.
Through upgrading Internet capacity, response time and speeds, 5G means easier access to data and information for users.
The result is that networks will have significantly lower latency or the time it takes for data to stream from one designated point to another.
This will provide a strong and efficient platform for smart technologies such as connected homes, virtual reality, connected cars and Artificial Intelligence, Vodafone said.
