Qatar volleyball team will fly to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta yesterday for the 18th edition of the Asian Games from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) after winning the AVC Cup for men, which concluded on Wednesday.
The Qatari team won the title on Wednesday after beating Iran 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25 22, 25-18, 15-10).
Qatar is set to play in Group F, which includes India, Maldives and Hong Kong, at the Asian Games. Qatar start their campaign against Maldives on August 20.
In a statement following the AVC Cup win, Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) president Ali Ghanim al-Kuwari conveyed his congratulations to the country’s leadership.
He also congratulated Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani and the Qatari people on the occasion of winning the AVC Cup.
Al-Kuwari added that the achievements of the team are historic, as Qatar emerged as the first Arab team to win this title. Going into the tournament, the goal was to reach the golden stage because of the strength of other teams. But the team showed determination and grit, winning the title and going into the Asian Games with momentum on their side.
