Commissioner for Voluntary Return and Resettlement of Darfur States Taj Eddin al-Tahir Ibrahim praised the model villages implemented by Qatar in the five Darfur states, stressing that the establishment of these villages made the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) a unique global model in integrated social development.

In statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), al-Taher said that Qatar has committed to implementing 75 integrated model villages in the framework of its Darfur development projects, something that is unique and unprecedented.
Qatar has guaranteed reconstruction and development for a full recovery after fulfilling its commitments to the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
To date, five villages have been established in the first phase in addition to 10 villages within the second phase.
The third phase will start with ten other villages bringing the total number of villages to 25 by the end of next year.
This will turn Darfur into an economic and social station that serves the Sudanese integrated development system and encourages the spread of the model village throughout the country, particularly in the conflict zones, he noted.
Al-Taher added that the model villages proved high efficiency, and the wisdom of the Qatari government and its insight into the dimensions of the peace agreement which went beyond the terms of the conventions to indications that reflect the strength of the relations between the two countries.
He underlined that the model villages have turned Darfur into an attractive area for all the people of the Sudan and its regional surroundings.
It provided employment opportunities and permanent stability for thousands of residents and served thousands in its neighboring areas.
It also laid a new roadmap for the future generations.
Al-Taher said that the current challenges include the provision of voluntary repatriation requirements.
This challenge requires concerted efforts with co-ordination of the peace process partners in the provision of shelter materials and livelihoods and raising the capacity of the security services in order to secure voluntary return villages, protect the civilians and develop their skills and productive capacities.
Al-Taher underlined that support of Qatar to Sudan is comprehensive and integrated, and is not limited to peace in Darfur, but included all the needs that enable the country to promote and sustain stability.
