Qatar has witnessed the registration of 1,958 new companies in May this year with limited liability companies constituting the majority of them, according to figures from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce.
Limited liability companies accounted for 62% of new commercial records, followed by limited liability companies in the category of single-person companies at 27%, while 10% of new companies were registered in the category of individual corporations.
Contracting companies topped the list of most common activities in May, with 361 commercial records issued in this field.
As many as 175 commercial records were issued for construction material trading, while 149 were issued for services and transactions. Restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream shops followed with 148 records.
A total of 8,283 commercial licences were issued, amended or renewed in May. Some 1,620 new commercial licences were issued, 946 were modified and 5,717 commercial licences were renewed, the report said, adding a total of 271 companies closed in May, representing 13.8% of newly registered companies.
Regarding write-off, contracting companies topped the list at 53%, followed by trading in construction materials at 21%. Public trading companies followed in third place at 10%, while electrical appliances and electronics trading, cafeterias, restaurants and ice cream shops came in the fourth place at 8%.
In the area of intellectual property rights, the report indicated that 44 new patent applications were issued in May while 260 patent applications were renewed. In addition, 23 trademarks were registered during May, while 24 certificates were issued in the field of copyright and related rights.
