*Plant to produce 2,520MW of electricity; official opening in October Umm Al Houl plant's water production stages complete

The water production stages of the Umm Al Houl Power Plant have been completed, a senior official of Kahramaa has said.

Fahad Hamad al-Mohannadi, General Manager and Managing Director of Kahramaa, said the plant currently pumps 136mn gallons of water daily.

Al-Mohannadi, who also serves as chairman of the board of Umm Al Houl Power Plant, said on Saturday that the completion of the power generation phase of the plant, which is scheduled to produce 2,520 megawatts (MW) of electricity, will soon be announced.

He said that the announcement of the completion of the water production stages of the plant confirmed that the project was ahead of schedule and demonstrated the ability of Qatar Electricity and Water Company to fulfil its obligations towards the state, especially as the company was working on completing its local projects at an accelerated pace. He also pointed out that this achievement confirmed the ability of the company to finish the full work of the station for its official opening in October next.

The chairman of the board stressed that the unjust blockade imposed on Qatar did not affect in any way the pace of projects related to the production of electricity and water carried out by Qatar Electricity and Water Company.

Al-Mohannadi said that the plant would support the country's consumption of water and electricity, adding about 25% to the installed capacity. Upon completion, it will be one of the largest power and desalination plants in the Gulf region. The plant will produce 60mn gallons of water through reverse osmosis, making it the largest terminal in the Gulf and Middle East region.

Al-Mohannadi stressed that the electricity and water authorities have been able to complete all projects to meet the growing demand in the country. The company has achieved the new feat the old stations such as Ras Abu Fontas A are being phased out.

He stressed that Kahramaa has managed to meet the enormous needs that have arisen because of the unprecedented all-round development witnessed by Qatar, thanks to the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir.
