Up to 30 people are missing after a boat capsized in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh, officials and news reports said on Wednesday.
The ferry was caught in gusty winds and capsized in the Godavari river in East Godavari district on Tuesday evening.
Senior police officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity could not confirm how many passengers were on the vessel but estimated that between 20 to 30 people were missing.
The IANS news agency said the boat was carrying 50 people and 10 passengers including two women swam to safety.
Rescue operations were underway on Wednesday, with divers from the Indian Navy locating the vessel at a depth of 60 feet, according to the report.
Rescue workers including those from the federal disaster relief agency were trying to break open the windows to pull out the bodies, it said.
Every year, scores of people drown in boat tragedies across India, which are mostly blamed on overcrowding, poor maintenance of vessels and lax safety rules.
The accident occurred days after a boat carrying 100 tourists caught fire on the Godavari river. All the passengers were saved in the incident.
