The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) will operate 25 health centres across Qatar with two new facilities set for official opening next month at Muaither and Al Wajbah, a top official said on Tuesday.

“We will also open two more health centres at Al Waab and Qatar University in the second half of this year, taking the total number of health centres to 27,” Dr Mariam Ali Abdulmalik, managing director, PHCC, told a press conference.

PHCC assistant managing director Musallam al-Nabit, Operation Department executive director Dr Samya al-Abdulla, Western Region head Dr Hiyam al-Sada and other officials were present.

“The Muaither Health Centre will start functioning from April 8 and the one at Al Wajbah from May 13. The official opening of both the facilities will be conducted in May by HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani,” explained Dr Mariam.

“Both the new facilities are wellness centres which provide all amenities available at other health and wellness centres under PHCC. Registration for the health centres is going on. Muaither Health Centre has already got close to 5,000 registrations while registration for Al-Wajba has just started,” the official said.

According to Dr Mariam, Muaither Health Centre is located on an area of around 19,800sq m. “We aim to reach 10,000 registrations in the first year and it has the capacity to provide care for up to 50,000 people. With the opening of both centres, the number of health centres in the western region will be nine, which will contribute to relieving the pressure on the other health centres in this region, especially since the number of people registered at each centre is about 90,000 to 100,000,” she described.

The new centres represents a leap in the quality of services by PHCC. They provide comprehensive health services such as family medicine clinics, pregnancy monitoring, healthy child services, routine immunisations, non-transitional disease clinics and smoking cessation services. In addition they also deliver services such as prenatal care, postnatal services, travel immunisation, dental clinics, nutrition and laryngologists, hearing and skin diseases, ophthalmology and physiotherapy.

Both the centres also provide comprehensive health services as well as pharmacy, radiology, dental clinic, and early screening services for breast and bowel cancer.
