The Bangladesh embassy in Doha yesterday observed the 47th anniversary of the country’s Independence and National Day with due solemnity.
The programme started with participation in the simultaneous worldwide rendering of Bangladesh’s national anthem at 5am on the embassy premises. This was followed by the hoisting of the national flag by the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Foreign Affairs and former Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr Dipu Moni, and Bangladesh ambassador Ashud Ahmed in the presence of embassy officials and a large number of Bangladeshi expatriates.
After the flag hoisting, a special prayer was offered for the eternal peace of the departed souls of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and martyrs of the Liberation War as well as for the continued peace and prosperity of the country.
A discussion meeting on the significance of the Day was organised at the embassy after the flag hoisting and munajat. At the beginning, all attendees observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Liberation War. Messages from Bangladesh’s president, prime minister, foreign minister and minister of state for foreign affairs were read out.
In his speech, ambassador Ahmed recalled Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s unique role in the process of Bangladesh’s liberation. Addressing the expatriate community, he said Bangladesh is now graduating from LDC (least developed country) status to a developing nation.
He reminded them that traditionally Bangladesh has sent unskilled workers and the need for these workers in Qatar is likely to reduce after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. “We all have to look for sectors where skilled workers can find jobs. Meanwhile, we are also taking initiatives to explore other sectors such as trade, investment and business. The embassy is also working to enhance Bangladesh-Qatar bilateral relations through high-level visits from both sides,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh MHM School & College, Doha, under the supervision of the mission, organised a programme on the school premises yesterday morning to celebrate the Independence and National Day. The ambassador hoisted the national flag and inaugurated the event.
He encouraged the students to devote themselves to pursuing their studies to become worthy citizens by taking forward the country and materialise the dream of Bangabandhu.
