Qatari women have achieved significant legal and social progression since the 1990s, according to a Qatar Chamber board member, who recently met with International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde.
Speaking at a recently held event to introduce Lagarde, Qatar Chamber board member Ibtehaj al-Ahmadani said Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser has been a vocal advocate of women’s issues, supporting women’s conferences, higher education, and the creation of a cabinet-level position in the government dedicated to women’s concerns.
“As a result of these advancements, Qatari women have many career opportunities, including leadership positions in education, banking, charitable projects, health and human services, tourism, law, civil service, and even in diplomacy.
“The State of Qatar stresses the importance of providing all resources to assist in the empowerment of women in all fields as part of the Sustainable Development Goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030, which focuses on achieving gender equality, empowering women, and promoting inclusive economic growth,” al-Ahmadani said.
She said the Qatari government has enacted much legislation in order to support the welfare of Qatari women, as well as seeking to uphold women’s rights, and to integrate women into society by providing economic assistance and employment opportunities.
“In this gathering, we have a group of the progressive female leaders and contributors to our society and economy. We are fortunate to have Ms Christine Lagarde as our guest and moderator for this discussion,” al-Ahmadani added.
