QU president Dr Hassan al-Derham yesterday inaugurated Qatar University’s (QU) new gymnasium.
The event, which comes on the sidelines of the National Sport Day, reflects QU’s commitment to motivate and encourage the community members to exercise and practice sports in their daily life.
The event was attended by QU vice presidents Dr Khalid al-Khater (Administration and Financial Affairs), Dr Khalid al-Khanji (student affairs), chief strategy and development officer Dr Darwish al-Emadi, student services and activities director Abdulla al-Yafei, QU Student Activities Department’s Sports and Recreation Activities manager Asmaa al-Naemi, and aquatic centre section head Walid Dessouki as well as members of the university community.
The ceremony included an address by Dr Hassan al-Derham and performances of physical and swimming activities by QU student athletes.
The new gymnasium, which is located at the Aquatic Centre, is equipped with world-class fitness equipment.
The Aquatic Centre consists of three swimming pools – Olympic pool, diving pool, and learning pool. It also contains a gym as well as a recreation centre, which includes a sauna and hot and cold jacuzzi.
The facilities are available for both QU members and the general community with annual membership.
Dr al-Derham said, “Qatar University is committed to providing its community with a healthy and developed environment. Today, we inaugurated a new gymnasium for male students and we will continue our efforts to develop the university’s infrastructure and increase our support of sports-related activities.” QU faculty, students, staff and their families will celebrate today the annual National Sport Day through a series of sporting and fitness events on the QU campus and at Katara.
