Two students from Qatar University College of Pharmacy (QU-CPH) recently completed an academic pharmacy leadership rotation at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.

PharmD students Noora al-Hamad and Amani Faisal al-Haddad were engaged in a wide range of learning activities, including meeting various leaders, attending leadership courses, learning about the healthcare system in Canada, working on a leadership project and participating in an indigenous interdisciplinary learning experience on cultural humility. They also had several opportunities to shadow the work of clinical pharmacists in ambulatory and in-patience care settings.

The students were precepted by Dr Patricia Gerber, associate professor and director of the Doctor of Pharmacy Graduate Programme at UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

CPH dean Dr Mohamed Diab said, “CPH puts great emphasis on providing students with a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences to enrich their education. Maintaining strong relationships with our international partners allows our students to gain professional experience and enhance their education. It also provides them with an opportunity to network with their peers and mentors in the global professional community.”

Dr Gerber noted, “It has been a pleasure precepting PharmD students from QU College of Pharmacy since 2014. Contributing to Noora’s and Amani’s training was not only a pleasure, but also an opportunity for the UBC faculty to learn about the pharmacy practice in Qatar and truly engage in this mutually beneficial experience.”

CPH Doctor of Pharmacy Programme director Dr Bridget Javed added, “The academic pharmacy leadership rotation at the University of British Columbia inspires our students to become leaders to promote pharmacy advancements within Qatar.”

Al-Hamad said, “From my training in Vancouver and Qatar, I can say that the clinical pharmacist has a very well-established role in both countries.”

Al-Haddad added, “After almost spending three weeks at UBC, I was able to identify the different aspects between the Doctor of Pharmacy Programmes in Qatar and Canada.”
