The cycling track at Ras Abu Abboud has been attracting an increasing number of enthusiasts who come in groups during weekends to engage in a healthy activity.
Various types of bicycles – from mountain bikes (MTB) and racers to folding bikes and BMX – roll on the white and green-painted path from an area at Ras Abu Abboud bridge towards the Hamad International Airport.
“A lot of people are fascinated with this track because it is safe and well-constructed, which makes it really appealing to a cyclist like me,” said Raymond, a Filipino expatriate who usually spends his weekend cycling.
He finds the scenery along the more than 13-km stretch attractive not only to cyclists but also to walkers and joggers, as well as skateboarders, due to its well-paved and lit track. It also features a dedicated walking and jogging path, and areas for skateboarding.
Apart from the beautiful landscape and colourful flowers, the stretch also has a short off road portions for MTBs. Portalets (portable toilets) are also located in some areas along the entire stretch.

Families and children can also spend some time to rest in shaded areas especially for those who cycle late in the morning. “The good thing is that cyclists here have the chance to say hi and hello with others because of the two-way lane, so you also meet new friends and buddies,” Raymond said.
The cycling track is one of the many tracks which opened last year, including the 3-km Outdoor Leisure Trail at the Doha Festival City, built to promote healthier lifestyles amongst the community.
A number of enthusiasts who took at least a round at the Ras Abu Abboud cycling track on Friday hope that races, recreational activities and competitions will be organised in the area.
Gulf Times had earlier reported that this track forms part of the 258km cycle and pedestrian ways along highways and main roads, which opened recently.
Qatar aims to have some 540km of cycle path by 2022. The cycle lanes on the northern side of the G-Ring Road are connected to the 13-km cycle lanes in Ras Abu Abboud road and Al Matar Street, forming a connected lane with a length of around 34km.
Ashghal is also constructing more cycle and pedestrian lanes in local areas based on the highest specifications and safety standards.
