US  Defence Secretary James N Mattis called the Kuwaiti defence minister on Friday to congratulate him on his new position and expressed appreciation for the longstanding strategic partnership between the United States and Kuwait, grounded in the 1991 liberation of the nation, according to a statement released by Pentagon press operations.
Mattis thanked his counterpart, Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah for Kuwait’s commitment to and hospitality toward hosting US troops.
The secretary also recognised the legacy of trust between the two nations, the statement said.
According to Kuwait News Agency (Kuna), he also “welcomed Kuwait’s critical help mediating the rift among members of the Gulf Co-operation Council,” and emphasised “the importance of deescalating tensions so all partners in the Gulf region can focus efforts against common threats.”
AFP adds: Sheikh Nasser was appointed defence minister earlier this month.
This is the first ministerial job for Sheikh Nasser, who has been the head of the royal court since early 2006.
