Qatari weightlifter Fares Ibrahim has won the silver medal in the 94kg category of the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California.
Fares, aged 19, won the medal after he managed to lift 220kg in the jerk. He came in fourth place overall amid strong competition.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Executive Manager of Qatar Weightlifting Federation Mubarak Zayed al-Khayareen said the victory was the first for Fares at the adult level. He had won the World Junior Championships in Japan, adding to his 2016 Asian Championship title and seventh placing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Al-Khayareen noted that the Qatari mission to the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim was headed by HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani.
He underlined that the remarkable achievements of the Qatari sports in general and weightlifting in particular were accomplished thanks to the strong support provided by Qatar Olympic Committee under the chairmanship of HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani.
He also gave credit to the Qatar Weightlifting Federation, headed by Mohammed Yousuf al-Mana, which organised local and foreign training camps and was keen to participate in regional, continental and international championships.
