International legal luminaries are set to meet in Doha for the third Qatar Law Forum starting Saturday to discuss the global commitment to the rule of law.
This year’s forum focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Leading the forum are HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, Attorney General of Qatar and President of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC), and the Lord Phillips, President of the Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC).
Organised by QICDRC and ROLACC, the two-day forum has proved unique in its ability to bring together global legal leaders to debate the nature and practicalities of the rule of law. Delegates attending the forum this year hail from over 60 countries, representing both the developing and developed world.
“The Qatar Law Forum 2017 will provide an unrivalled platform to debate the global commitment to the rule of law, and at this time of world-wide uncertainty and insecurity, constructive international dialogue is as critical as ever. The hosting of this global forum in Doha is a fine example of Qatar’s commitment to the rule of law and its willingness to lead the rule of law debate in the region,” al-Marri said.
Over two days there will be five plenary sessions all linked to the rule of law and Goal 16: combating corruption; protecting and enabling displaced persons; modern day slavery; effective judicial institutions (tackling delay and access justice); and financial inclusion.
“With so many leaders of the international legal community attending the Forum, there is an opportunity to make a real contribution towards UN Sustainable Development Goal 16 by addressing its relationship to current global problems and identifying practical steps towards its achievement,” Phillips said.
