Seven people have been killed and some 10,000 people evacuated in Malaysia after weekend rain in the north-west states of Penang and Kedah caused flash flooding, local media reported on Monday.
"Over the past 48 hours, the people of Penang have pulled together to help each other through the worst flood crisis in recent memory," Penang's Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng wrote on Monday on social media.
He thanked donors for providing and distributing food, adding that efforts now need "cleaning kits, lorries and large vehicles to clear rubbish and fallen trees and volunteers to help clean flood-affected homes."
Despite the weather, nationwide school exams started on Monday for tens of thousands of students in Penang and Kedah, according to the Star Online.
Students in the affected areas arrived at schools without uniforms, travelling in pick-up trucks and lorries provided by the police, local media reported.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department on Sunday said the rains were caused by "a low pressure area in the two states," which brought on heavy winds and moisture, the New Straits Times reported.
