The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has reiterated its commitment to reduce the carbon emissions consistently in the coming years, senior engineer and president Issa bin Hilal al-Kuwari said.
He was speaking in a panel at the opening session of the Qatar Green Building Conference held as part of the Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW) on Sunday.
Al-Attiyah International Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development chairman HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah and Qatar Green Building Council chairman Issa bin Mohamed al-Mohannadi were also on the panel. While reaffirming Kahramaa’s commitment, al-Kuwari said their corporation’s continuous efforts have helped record substantial reduction in the consumption of electricity in the country by nearly 46% in 2015 and 39.6% last year. “We are spreading awareness on rationalising the use of vital resources like water and energy and substantial reduction in their consumption at different levels,” he said while informing that there have been a remarkable reduction in their usage across the country since the launch of rationalisation campaign (Tarsheed) in April 2012.
Al-Kuwari said Kahramaa is continuing efforts to achieve a steady annual reduction in the consumption of electricity by 25% and water by 35%.
Kahramaa president recalled the initiatives made by their corporation while succeeding to reduce carbon emissions by an astonishing 8.5mn tonnes since the launch of Tarsheed.
While speaking about the contributions of Kahramaa’s Awareness Park in Al Thumama, al-Kuwari described it as a model platform for educating the future generations about the principles of rationalisation, especially reduction in the consumption of energy and water and efficient use and applications of renewable energy.
