The General Authority of Customs (GAC) has foiled a number of attempts to smuggle illicit drugs and banned firearms into the country, it was announced on Sunday.
A total of 46kg of marijuana, 200,000 Captagon pills, two firearms and 2,500 bullets were seized in different operations.
The marijuana was seized through seven different operations from a number of different travellers at Hamad International Airport (HIA). The customs inspectors in charge suspected the content of some bags of such travellers and ordered full search, leading to the unearthing of the illicit drugs tightly wrapped in plastic and carbon paper and hidden carefully under the clothes and inside bags of fish and spices.
Two inspectors who were honoured are seen with officials.
The firearms and ammunition seized
The Captagon pills were seized when a customs inspector at the Air Cargo and Private Airports Customs Department opened a package in the presence of the addressee and found hollow boards inside which the illicit pills were found.
The two firearms were seized at Abu Smra border post. The traveller who was trying to enter the country hid the 9mm caliber firearms besides the engine of his vehicle alongside 2,500 bullets for machine gun and 9mm caliber.
Accordingly, all such violators alongside the seized items were referred to the security department concerned to take the necessary legal procedures against them.
GAC president Ahmed bin Abdulla al-Jammal honoured the 10 customs inspectors at HIA, the Air Cargo and Private Airports Customs Department and land borders customs, who were able to foil such smuggling attempts.
He also expressed his happiness at the high alertness of customs officials, who are highly trained and capable of doing their duty efficiently.
